This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to perform design and decoration advice for building interiors. Design and decoration at this level covers the development of complete decorative schemes for the effective use of residential and commercial or institutional interior spaces, working with a client brief and within project parameters. It may also include specialist design areas, such as facilities for people with disabilities and the aged.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Prerequisite: Certificate III in Design Fundamentals (R10408)
  • Submission of a portfolio, design or written task. Download document
  • Academic IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (iBT) 60 or English Language Programs (Beginner to Advanced) at TAFE NSW or equivalent

    COURSE STRUCTURE AND UNITS

    To receive the Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration students must complete all core units and, if available, a range of additional units.

    Note: Additional units contain compulsory and elective units which may vary between each semester and campus, and will depend on a number of considerations including the packaging rules for the qualification and demand for the unit.

    When you finish this course you may be eligible to apply for entry into Advanced Diploma of Interior Design (S14105) or the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) (20501).

    Course fees and duration can vary based on the Institute you want to study at, the entry requirements for the course, and the year you will begin study.

    Additional costs for uniforms, equipment, textbooks and materials (if applicable) range from A$300 - $1,000 per course.

    CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

    • self-employment as an interior decorator, colour consultant or interior stylist
    • in-house interior designer or decorator for design and decoration consultancies, furniture, furnishings and fabric suppliers, furnishing departments of retail stores or shop fitters

    TAFE NSW allows for two or more courses to be packaged together leading to a TAFE NSW Bachelor Degree, either to meet the prerequisite requirements for a course or to plan your studies around your career goals. You can submit a single TAFE NSW application form and will be able to apply for one Student Visa for the full duration of the package.
