'Epic' excursion helping cultivate careers at TAFE NSW Moss Vale

EPIC ADVENTURE: Horticulture and landscape construction students from TAFE NSW Moss Vale at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

2 May 2022

Students from TAFE NSW Moss Vale have been given one-on-one exposure to some of the nation’s biggest names in landscape construction and horticulture as part of a special trip to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show last month.

Moss Vale students formed part of a 35-strong TAFE NSW contingent at the marquee event, meeting industry heavyweights and even being offered mentorship by some of the industry’s best-known figures.

Exeter landscape construction apprentice Felicity Motycka, who with her husband operates Ghostwood Landscapes, said the trip helped her build valuable industry connections and develop fresh ideas about garden design and plant selection.

“I spoke to quite a few designers, some of them very well-known, and I never dreamed I would get such amazing one-on-one access,” Ms Motycka said.

“It was a fantastic opportunity and will have real benefits for our business.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Horticulture Gabriele Harding said the visit highlighted how TAFE NSW’s powerful industry partnerships helped students develop their practical skills and expand their professional networks.

“It really was an unbelievable opportunity for these students and it could literally change the course of their careers,” Ms Harding said.

“These industry leaders were actively reaching out to our students, offering to mentor them and inviting them back next year.

“They were also able to see the latest trends and technologies in the industry and it’s something they will remember forever.”

Long-time Better Homes and Gardens host and former Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show gold medallist Jason Hodges, who studied his trade at TAFE NSW, guided the students through the show, introducing them to key industry figures.

The two-day trip was sponsored by local industry and included horticulture, parks and gardens, and landscape construction students.
