TAFE NSW Baulkham Hills

Thanks to Instagram, the look of food has become equally as important - if not more - than the taste. TAFE NSW Baulkham Hills has responded to novice bakers who want to dress their cakes to impress their guests and have announced the introduction of a cake decorating short course.

Perfect for hobby bakers and complete novices, the four-hour TAFE Plus Statement in Finishing Cakes with Flair will teach students the skills they need to up their cake decorating game.

For those looking to make a career move into baking, the timing could not be better considering it is estimated that there will be a 16.7 per cent increase in the need for pastry chefs over the next five years.[1]

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Hospitality, Karen Franklin said since the introduction of Instagram and shows like MasterChef there has been an increase in demand for food aesthetics and cakes are no exception.

“This hands-on workshop will teach students how to make a variety of icings, ganaches and frosting suitable for a range of sweets like cupcakes, birthday cakes, slices, gateaus and tortes.

“Throughout the workshop they will also be taught the trick to creating Insta-worthy cakes, learning how to add the finishing touches working with roses, butterflies, chocolate filigree and different piping techniques.

Leaving the workshop with twelve mini decorated cakes and some sweet new skills, students will be impressing their loved ones with crafty cakes from now on.
