YOU BEAUTY: Ally Smith has a running start into the booming beauty industry thanks to TAFE NSW.

19 September, 2019

According to the Australian Industry and Skills Committee, beauty therapist positions nationwide are projected to grow from 30,300 in 2018 to 42,800 by 2023.

For Ally Smith, watching a client walk out of the salon with an extra bounce in their step is the ultimate job satisfaction.

A beautician at Young’s The Stables Day Spa, Ms Smith credits TAFE NSW with giving her the skills and inspiration to pursue a career in beauty, an industry riding the wave of a jobs boom.

Ms Smith has the beauty industry in her DNA – her nan owned a local hairdressing business where Ms Smith spent many afternoons as a child.

It led her to studying Certificate III in Beauty Therapy and go on to complete a Diploma of Beauty Therapy at TAFE NSW.

“I knew by year 5 that I wanted to work in the beauty industry when I finished high school,” Ms Smith said.

“To be able to make someone feel special is a real privilege; you can really turn someone’s day around.”

Ms Smith studied her Diploma at TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga and was “blown away” by the quality of the facilities.

“I knew if I completed a diploma, I would learn so much more. So, I enrolled,” Ms Smith said.

“The new beauty training rooms had just opened at TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga and they are amazing. All the equipment is top of the line and the students were doing all engaged in practical, professional beauty treatments.

“My teacher was so passionate about beauty and made the practical side of learn so engaging. I’m a real hands-on learner and she made me love everything I did.”

So inspired was she by the experience, Ms Smith hopes to become a TAFE NSW beauty teacher in the future to help “make a difference” to future generations of beauty therapists.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Beauty Naomi Zadow said the Diploma of Beauty Therapy offered students a wide array of skills, including manicure, pedicure, tanning, waxing, tinting, facials, body treatments and spa treatments.
