A Dubbo local, Ben Josephs, is encouraging others looking to progress their career to consider upskilling with a leadership and management course at TAFE NSW.

Studying online through TAFE Western Connect ignited a spark for the electrician who originally commenced studying a Statement of Attainment in Leadership and Management and is now part-way through a Diploma of Leadership and Management at TAFE NSW to better his career opportunities.

“I was looking for a course that would enable me to improve my management skills as well learn about running a business,” Mr Josephs said.

“I needed the flexibility of being able to study online while working full-time as an electrician at Red Earth Electrical, but also access to teaching support and learning facilities in Dubbo. TAFE NSW did just that through TAFE Western Connect.

“I’m really enjoying the Diploma and have recently provided training to my colleagues on emotional intelligence and have made improvements to the strategic and operational plans for the business as a result of my study.”

According to a recent study by TAFE NSW, almost half of Australian businesses would rather hire talent than train existing employees with 70% of these businesses then finding it difficult to hire workers with the specific skills needed. Red Earth Electrical Business Owner, Hale Gordon, said Ben has grown into the role of supervisor since commencing with the business two years ago.

“Ben took the initiative to study at TAFE NSW when he began with the business to better himself. The course has given him a greater understanding of how to manage employers, deal with different personalities and mentor staff which he is now doing daily in his role.

“I encourage all my staff to take the opportunity to invest in themselves through training and development, not only does it lead to greater opportunities but increases positive self-worth,” Mr Gordon said.
