A group of future agricultural leaders have been given a career “leg up” by being awarded prestigious scholarships by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation.

The six students from TAFE NSW Primary Industries Centre (PIC) will later this month be formally presented with their scholarships, ranging in value from $3000 to $6000.

The scholarships are aimed at supporting the students’ studies at TAFE NSW and awarded after an extensive application process.

Marrar’s Rhys Langtry, who is studying a Diploma of Agriculture at TAFE NSW PIC, said his $6000 scholarship would enable to him to focus more squarely on his studies.

“It will help pay for my course and other things like fuel – it really takes the pressure off,” Mr Langtry said.

“Studying the Diploma at TAFE NSW has been really interesting, particularly the financial components of running a farm.”

Mr Langtry plans to return to help run his family’s cropping and cattle farm – “Currawong” – upon graduating.

Others to earn scholarships include Meg Crouch, Molly Wright, David Bowden, Will Roberts and Veronike Hartmeier.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Agribusiness Rob Harris said the scholarships were a fitting recognition of the talents and leadership of the recipients.

“TAFE NSW prides itself on providing the leaders of tomorrow with the practical skills they will need to thrive in a professional environment,” Mr Harris said.

“To have so many students from TAFE NSW receive these scholarships is testament to the quality of both those that choose to study here and those teachers who teach and mentor them.”

TAFE NSW Primary Industries Centre (PIC) is located at North Wagga on 250 hectares of farmland and is one of the country’s finest institutions for the study of agriculture and horticulture.
