After working in social justice and environmental advocacy for 20 years TAFE NSW Randwick student, Corinne Fisher was yearning for the opportunity to slow down and reconnect, by turning her love for remedial massage into an alternate career.

“For as long as I can remember, I have always loved massage. Whether it be giving or receiving them, I found the whole process very calming. So when I discovered that TAFE NSW offered massage courses, I jumped at the opportunity to study something I enjoyed.”

Since graduating from a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy at TAFE NSW Randwick, Corinne has opened her own side business ‘Corinne Fisher Massage Therapy’, where she offers a range of treatments specifically tailored to her client’s needs.

Corinne admits that starting her own business was quite confronting, “I’d never worked in small business before, so originally there was a lot to get my head around. Ever since putting myself out there and getting the business website set up, it has been going really well. My Christmas special at the end of last year attracted 20 clients alone.”

With practical skills and experience at the forefront of the course, Corinne was able to harness the advance massage techniques needed to run her own business.

“I am currently completing the Diploma of Remedial Massage which is fantastic! In the past, I had never really considered TAFE NSW as an option for study, but I am glad I did. I have been very impressed by the dedication of the teachers. I really feel like they are delivering courses at a standard that is creating professionals who can confidently enter the workforce.”

Over the next five years the Australian Government predicts the number of massage therapist will continue to grow very strongly, with 15,000 jobs opening in the field during this period.[1] This prediction reveals the demand for massage services will continue to grow, making Corinne’s decision to follow her passion a savvy career move.

Corinne explains, “Remedial massage requires me to use very different skills and parts of the brain than I use as a social justice and environmental advocate. I find it very relaxing to be able to use these skills and give my clients a professional massage that enhances their wellbeing.”

Once she has completed her Diploma of Remedial Massage, Corinne aims to spend more time focused on doing what she loves at Corinne Fisher Massage Therapy.
