TAFE NSW graduate Kara Jayne is encouraging the local community to consider a career helping others as statistics reveal that domestic violence rates are higher in rural and regional NSW and have risen exponentially through the pandemic.

Reports of domestic violence related assaults increased by almost 50 per cent in parts of NSW in the past year. After falling victim to domestic violence herself, Kara Jayne has made it her mission to help others in a similar situation.

This week, TAFE NSW will run a virtual workshop in dealing with domestic and family violence. TAFE NSW Community Services Head Teacher Katrina Cameron said this is a course that can change and save lives.

“It is so important that the community are equipped with skills to be able to recognise and prevent domestic violence as well as have the skills to support victims.

“All types of people face the possibility of experiencing domestic and family violence. Anyone may find themselves in a situation where they have to assist someone else.”

The course is a three-hour introductory workshop, and experienced teachers share insights into domestic and family violence, and provide critical information on what to look for, and what to do.

Ms Jayne said “I’m so passionate about changing social injustices and gender inequalities.

“After escaping a domestic violence situation five years ago, I have been raising my five year old daughter on my own. I decided to study Community Services at TAFE NSW and I have now secured a job I love in support services for ParentsNext.”

“My TAFE NSW teachers were really supportive and shared their industry knowledge and contacts with me to kick-start my career. Studying with TAFE NSW gave me the confidence to get involved and make new connections with local industry organisations.”

“I would like to continue to assist the community in building stronger families by empowering women in NSW.”

Ms Cameron said Jane has consistently worked to a very high standard during her studies.

“Jayne is the perfect example of students coming to TAFE NSW to get the job-ready skills to work in an industry that is in need of skilled professionals.”
