From number cruncher to business whiz with TAFE NSW

Surry Hills local Mike Joyce has made the switch to a marketing career and landed his dream job after studying with TAFE NSW.

32-year-old Mike already had a degree and an established career in the research sector but knew that he wanted to switch to a career in marketing. Now he’s encouraging other workers dreaming for a change to “just go for it” after securing his dream job as a Strategy and Insights Manager at HSBC.

The number of people working as advertising and marketing professionals is expected to grow strongly from 74,800 in 2018 to 84,100 by 2023[1]. Mike enrolled first in the Diploma of Business Administration then the Diploma of Marketing at TAFE NSW and was thrilled with the hands-on approach to learning he enjoyed during the course.

Mike said, “I love to learn, and I knew that I wanted to change my career path so I was looking for some hands-on skills in business, marketing and public Relations to broaden my capability. After looking at all my options TAFE NSW was by far and away the best option for me.

“TAFE NSW has great industry connections and flexible study options so I knew I would be able to fit in both study and work. I also knew I would have an excellent chance of getting a good job once I had completed my studies.

“I learnt about all aspects of business administration, marketing and public relations but above all I learnt about the importance of relationship building; it’s not all about turning in exams, it’s about the people you meet along the way.”

Teacher Anne Lawler was able to secure an internship for Mike and he was quickly offered a job at the organization.

“Mike was a standout student, always eager to learn and ready for anything. I’m glad we had the chance to help Mike improve his career options and get the job he has always wanted,” Anne said.

Mike has now secured a job as a Strategy and Insights Manager at HSBC and could not be happier with the way that TAFE NSW has enhanced his career and employment options.

“I was so happy with my experience. I encourage anyone who is looking to change careers or broaden their skill set to consider TAFE NSW and set themselves up for success.”
