Giving drafting a go takes TAFE NSW graduate to new heights in building design

19 July, 2019

Career morphing from graphic design, to childcare and then building design has seen Beatriz Wright land her dream job with Ferntree Homes.

Ms Wright, who hails from The Ponds, Hills District said, “I had a yen to do something creative, but didn’t want to go back into graphic or web design as the fields had changed so much while I was working in childcare.”

Knowing she would need to retrain, Ms Wright decided to give drafting a go and enrolled in an online Diploma of Building Design with TAFE Digital.

“Completing the diploma gave me a great start to finding my dream job as a building designer with Ferntree Homes,” she said.

The knowledge and intricacies of applying what she has learnt into her projects certainly has paid dividends for Ms Wright.

“At first subjects like council compliance, problem solving, learning to design for residential, multi-storey and commercial, while using software which was new to me, was pretty daunting,” she said. “It’s a thrill when plans are passed though and you see your work coming to fruition with buildings emerging from draft inception stage right through to completion.”

Ms Wright’s best building designs have been the duplexes she is currently designing with Ferntree Homes in Bella Vista, Baulkham Hills.

“The standout duplex is a residential design on a difficult block which has a big slope and an odd shape,” she said. “The clients also had many of their own design ideas and requirements, which posed additional challenges.”

After researching the best solutions, Ms Wright was able to work through both sets of constraints to create an attractive and compliant design that she is very proud of. “The contagious joy emanating from the clients’ faces makes it so worthwhile!” she said.

Ms Wright said she would not have her career ambition without TAFE Digital and the fantastic support she got from the teachers.

“It was tremendous being able to access mainstream courseware, attend virtual classes and discuss assignments via chat bots with other students from the comfort of my own home,” she said.

Ms Wright is definitely on the right track in joining this sector. The Australian Government’s Job Outlook predicts there will be about 1,800 openings a year for qualified architects and landscape architects.
