How TAFE NSW helped Joseph propel his career

A local 18-year-old with hopes of working in the public sector has fast-tracked his career by studying a TAFE NSW business course while still in high school.

Joseph Stanley completed a Certificate II in Business through TAFE Digital as a TVET course and secured a scholarship to study a Bachelor of Arts at UNSW, as a pathway to studying Law.

The TAFE NSW student was also recently awarded a Trailblazer Award by Art of Smart for his community service and academic accomplishments, along with TAFE NSW Technology and Business Services Student of the Year last year.

“In Year 9, I learnt through my career advisor that I could gain a TAFE NSW qualification as part of my HSC. Since then, I’ve gained a real passion for giving career advice and have helped lots of my friends decide on their career path,” Joseph said.

“While the default option for students is often university, I’ve found studying a TVET course gives you a huge head start on your career. Being able to study something you’re passionate about, which not only counts towards your HSC but gives you an industry-recognised qualification, is a no-brainer.

“I’ve since progressed to a Certificate IV in Business Administration and have been accepted into university while working full-time in the industry. I’m looking forward to one day working in HR or employment, and helping others find their passion and succeed in their careers.”

TAFE NSW Business Administration Head Teacher Monica O’Neill said Joseph is a prime example of how TVET courses can help students gain job-ready skills during high school.

“Our nationally accredited business courses equip students with the hands-on administration, communication, and organisational skills they need to join the workforce, and provides a strong pathway to further study,” Ms O’Neill said.

“TVET courses are unique in that they help students build practical skills and industry-specific knowledge in an area they’re genuinely interested in, while counting towards their HSC.

“Best of all, studying online through TAFE NSW provides flexibility and freedom so students can work around their other work and study commitments, and progress their career goals at their own pace.”
