A Roseland single mother-of-seven has turned to TAFE NSW to equip her with the computer skills she needs to support her children with their online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Christina Pare has always struggled to use a computer and relys on her children to help access her emails and basic computer programs. It is a common scenario across the country with more than 2.5 million Australians still not online.

With four of Christina’s seven children learning from home during the height of the pandemic, she saw this as the perfect opportunity to develop her online literacy. She came across the TAFE NSW Statement of Attainment in Education and Employment Pathways course through the Australian Muslim Women’s Association. 

Christina said, “I never thought I’d pick up computer skills so quickly, let alone complete a course in an online environment. 

“It means so much to me that I was able to help my kids navigate their school content and be able to communicate with their teachers on their learning platforms. 

“As a mother, I want to support my kids and show them that I’m capable of helping them and learning new things, and thanks to TAFE NSW I’m now able to put these practical skills to work and pursue employment.” 

As part of the eight-week course, TAFE NSW students learn hands-on skills of software programs including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, as well as how to send and receive emails and key employability skills like how to prepare for a job interview.  

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Career Pathways and Employability Skills, Michelle Morrison, said the course is available for culturally and linguistically diverse learners, , unemployed Australians, and those who identify as  living with a disability who want to take the first step in their career.  

“The TAFE NSW Statement of Attainment in Education and Employment Pathways offers students like Christina practical digital skills that are essential in any modern workplace,” Ms Morrison said.  

“The qualification is a great stepping stone for those looking to further their educationand gain meaningful employment in critical skills areas but lack confidence and computer skills to make this a reality,” Ms Morrison said.
