TAFE NSW Kurri Kurri is celebrating the success of Sports Turf Management graduate Angus Beasley who has won the national 2019 Golf Graduate of the Year Award presented by the Australian Sports Turf Management Association (ASTMA).

Angus Beasley completed a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management in 2019 and is employed as head greenkeeper at Scone Golf Club.

The ASTMA annual awards celebrate excellence in golf course management and recipients of the Graduate of the Year ultimately go on to play a major role in the development and direction of golf course maintenance around Australia.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation Albert Sherry congratulated Angus on the award and said the sports turf management teaching team are very proud of Angus’ achievements.

“TAFE NSW has established a reputation as the leading provider of sports turf management training in Australia with graduates from Kurri Kurri winning the past two out of three national titles and having the practical skills and work experience they need to take up employment.

“Maintaining a golf course is a specialist field of horticulture which Angus has excelled at and he is very deserving of this award.

“Angus was extremely dedicated in his studies and demonstrated distinction in a range of skills related to sports turf management such as irrigation, maintenance and proficient use of machinery,” he said.

Angus Beasley said he was proud to have won the award and was very thankful for everyone that he has worked with to date. The award includes an opportunity to visit other golf courses and learn more about machinery and irrigation related to sports turf management.

“Studying at TAFE NSW was excellent. As well as the theory we had a lot of practice with different turf species and equipment to learn about growing conditions, irrigation, pests and diseases and management practices crucial for maintaining quality playing surfaces,” Angus said.
