Jalyn knows how to crop it like its hot

TAFE NSW Nepean

The increase in Australian’s use of web and mobile platforms is a key driver in the growing demand for more qualified graphic designers.

According to the Australian Government’s Job Outlook, the number of Graphic and Web Designers, and Illustrators grew strongly over the past five years and is expected to grow strongly over the next five years from 59,500 in 2018 to 67,000 by 2023.

Jalyn Bryce completed the Diploma of Graphic Design at TAFE NSW Nepean and is using the skills and knowledge she gained to pursue a career in the industry.

Jalyn is working in the design team at Officeworks in North Rocks, gaining as much experience as possible and hopes to move into full time graphic design role in the future.

While studying, Jalyn worked as a freelance graphic designer, initially doubting her ability, she drew on her course learnings to fulfil the brief and produce amazing work for a very happy client.

“The TAFE NSW Diploma of Graphic Design taught me everything I needed to know, from the fundamentals through to how to use the key design programs - InDesign and Photoshop,” said Jalyn.

“Working with clients is the best part of my job, seeing a brief from concept through to the finished product and having satisfied customer is really rewarding.”

“As a graphic designer, you always need to be learning and broadening your skills. My advice for anyone who is looking to get into the industry is to compete as many short courses as possible as it could give you the advantage against your competitors and get as much experience as you can.

As an industry that has an annual revenue of $4.3 billion[1], the future for budding graphic designers is looking bright especially the days of jobs only being to design posters, print ads or invitations are long gone. Graphic designers can now pursue a range of career options including games designer, interactive designer, animation and special effects.
