The Royal Australian Air Force conducts four pilot courses each year and for the approximately 140 positions available there are on average 1,500 applications. Competition for placement is fierce[i].

The key is to be the most impressive of all applicants and TAFE NSW equips students with the edge they need. Josh White decided at a young age that becoming a RAAF Officer is exactly what he wants to do, and thanks to TAFE NSW he is now well on his way.

After an unsuccessful application to join the RAAF in 2016, he received feedback that he needed to complete the required high school subjects, which were at the time year 11 physics and year 11 and 12 advanced maths. Josh turned to TAFE NSW for the courses he needed to achieve his dreams.

With physics offered at TAFE NSW Armidale and advanced maths offered at TAFE NSW Wollongbar, Josh was able to video conference in to these courses instead of having to move. This enabled him the flexibility to also work full time.

While undertaking the advanced maths course there were a number of supervised tests, assessments and exams that required Josh to sit at an approved facility, so arrangements were made for him to sit all appointments at TAFE NSW Newcastle.

Josh said with TAFE NSW’s innovative flexible learning options, he was able to study when it was convenient for him as opposed to attending set classes.

“The highly skilled and knowledgeable staff were a fantastic help, only being an email or phone call away if I needed help,” he said.

“Two years ago, I was faced with the possibility that I may not be able to complete the studying required. Now, I have successfully completed all year 11 physics and year 11 and 12 advanced maths in just a 10-month window, while still working full time.”

“TAFE NSW have given me the chance as an adult student to gain the skills and knowledge to confidently pursue my dream job to join the RAAF as an officer.”

Josh has re-applied for the RAAF and successfully completed the academic testing. He is currently going through the remainder of the recruitment process.
