Leila’s on a roll after completing her HSC with TAFE NSW

As students around the country begin to receive their HSC results, Leila Frost has proven there is more than one pathway to university after completing her HSC at TAFE NSW and applying for university despite incredible odds.

Leila had a difficult time completing her schooling due to her living circumstances which meant she could not regularly attend school and was unable to complete her HSC. Once her circumstances improved, Leila  wanted to complete her schooling but didn’t know to make the transition.

“Once my home circumstances settled, I decided that I wanted to return to my studies and complete my HSC so that I could improve my employment options.

“I did some research and discovered I could complete my studies in an adult learning environment at TAFE NSW.”

ABS findings reveal 68% of people aged 20-64 years have a non-school qualification, with rates for men and women gradually converging over the past 15 years[1].

TAFE NSW offers a successful alternative to studying the HSC for students like Leila who struggled with school. She studied the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation at TAFE NSW St Leonards and is now applying for university – something she admits she never thought she would do.

“By studying the Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation at TAFE NSW I have secured my HSC and an ATAR, the skill of critical thinking, time management and a rounded understanding of the world.

“I enjoyed being able to study when it suited me, the understanding and supportive environment. What really stands out to me is the length that teachers went to in order to help you succeed,” Leila said.

TAFE NSW Educational Pathways teacher, Melissa Knudson, said that pathways courses were vital for students like Leila to help them to realise their potential.

“We see so many come through who just need that little extra bit of support to get them across the line.

“Leila was such a wonderful student, but personal circumstances prevented her from completing her studies at school. Once she could see that she was more than capable of succeeding and applying for higher education, she blossomed.” Ms Knusdon said.

Now, Leila’s pursuing her dreams and applying for courses at university – a thought that would have once seemed impossible.

“In the future, I see myself as a university graduate who is actively and eagerly creating positive change in the workforce.

“Studying at TAFE NSW is an awesome opportunity that I would recommend to anyone. I’d never had aspirations of going to university before I came here, so it really does have the potential to change your life for the better.”
