New baking course at TAFE NSW Orange to kick start careers

TAFE NSW Orange is now offering a new Certificate II in Bakery course, for people who want to build on their baking skills and kick-start their dream career.

The new course will help meet the demand locally for trained Bakers, by delivering hands-on training to locals with a clear pathway to an apprenticeship.

The new course will provide students with the practical and hands-on skills they need to work in a commercial bakery, learning on state-of-the-art equipment at TAFE NSW Orange.

Head Teacher Michael Apps said the Certificate II in Bakery is a perfect pathway into the trade, without requiring students to have an apprenticeship in place.

“This course gives students an introduction to what is expected in a bakery career, and all units completed contribute to a Certificate III in Bakery if they decide to undertake an apprenticeship,” Mr Apps said.

“Students will learn everything from how to make the best sponge cakes and pastry products, to bread production, hygiene, and work health and safety components.

“Bakeries are always looking for skilled workers, so people wanting to pursue a career in baking have plenty of opportunities here in the Central West.”

Gabby Thompson, who is completing a Certificate III in Bakery at TAFE NSW Orange, said the new course is a great opportunity, and encourages others to follow turn their love for baking into an income.

“It is a rewarding career. People love food. It makes people happy and brings people together, and I love being a part of peoples’ special days,” she said.

“I would say to others, jump right in. You will learn all the valuable skills you need to be successful in a career as a baker.”

The 25-year-old is completing an apprenticeship at the Sugar Mill in Orange but has plans to fulfill a dream of opening her own bakery.
