NEW COURSE OFFERING TO TARGET INDUSTRY DEMAND

TAFE NSW Kempsey

TAFE NSW Regional General Manager Susie George has today announced the introduction of a Certificate III in Horticulture at TAFE NSW Kempsey commencing this month.

With job outcomes which include a gardener, nursery employee, horticulture consultant and garden maintenance, students can take advantage of a forecast growth in the nation’s $3 billion horticulture industry.

The number of people working as gardeners nationally is expected to grow strongly over the next five years, having risen from 77,900 in 2018 and on track to meet 88,800 by 2023.[i]

“This is a great opportunity for locals to be qualified in a rewarding and in-demand profession right here in the Macleay,” Ms George said.

“It’s also another example of how TAFE NSW works hand in glove with local industry to recognise training needs and skills gaps, and then tailors courses accordingly.”

Students will learn the fundamental aspects of horticulture, including plants and soils, environmentally sustainable work practices, safety on-the-job, biosecurity and chemicals use, irrigation and machinery operation.

“TAFE NSW is proud to be supporting the Macleay community by ensuring the workforce has the skills to meet the demands of such a critical local industry,” Ms George said.

“With current and future job prospects for the Macleay Valley region looking bright, I encourage the community to visit TAFE NSW to find out how you can up-skill or re-skill to pursue employment opportunities.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Horticulture Geoff Turner said the course was an ideal pathway to work or further study, particularly in the Diploma of Horticulture.

“The course is an introduction to horticulture and the industry where there are plenty of jobs available,” Mr Turner said.

Various TAFE NSW courses can also be studied online, when and where it suits students, via TAFE Digital. For more detail on TAFE NSW courses, face-to-face or online, visit www.tafensw.com.au or call 131 601.
