New diploma course a 'shot in the arm' for Corowa business sector

18 February, 2019

A TAFE NSW diploma course being offered for the first time in Corowa will better enable the community to “grow its own” leaders of tomorrow, according to the town’s mayor.

The Diploma of Leadership and Management is enrolling now for semester one at TAFE NSW Corowa’s new, state-of-the-art Connected Learning Centre (CLC).

The diploma covers a broad range of subject areas, including leadership behaviour, communication at work, innovation in the workplace, diversity, risk, and work, health and safety.

Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke said the new course was a potential game-changer and would help the region better train and retain its best and brightest.

“Anything that can help grow the capacity of our future community leaders is a positive thing and I commend TAFE NSW for introducing this course in Corowa,” Cr Bourke said.

“We have so many talented and ambitious young people in the Federation Region and this will help many of them take the next steps in their career.”

The course will be delivered by TAFE NSW teacher and businesswoman Shirley Virtue, who still manages her family business and has an extensive project management and marketing background, including as a former coordinator of the Deni Ute Muster.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Leadership and Management Peter Charker said the landmark diploma course was suitable for people employed across a range of different industries.

“The TAFE NSW Diploma of Leadership and Management applies across different industry sectors and allows students to take what they learn and apply it in the own workplace,” Mr Charker said. “It’s suitable for those currently in work who are in a supervisory role and want to more effectively lead their teams.

“It’s essential regional people are given the opportunity to advance their careers in their local community and that’s what this course, and the Connected Learning Centre, offers the Deniliquin community.”

The Diploma of Leadership and Management can also be studied online, when and where it suits students, via TAFE Digital.
