TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore has received a $230,000 special effects and makeup facilities upgrade to support the return of live entertainment in Sydney.
Live entertainment is coming back with gusto, with many live events and shows kicking off in 2022 including productions like 9 to 5 The Musical, Mary Poppins and Moulin Rouge! The Musical. In addition, the NSW Government is investing an additional $86 million to revitalise the sector post COVID-19.
The funding is designed to support artists, musicians, theatres, venues, festivals and cultural organisations in NSW to bounce back quickly and reignite the economy through their cultural offerings.
TAFE NSW teacher of makeup Rachel Dal Santo said the new facilities at TAFE NSW Enmore would be used by students in the Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services to hone their skills in special effects and stage make-up.
“The skilled designers and craftsmen transformed a "last century" art classroom into a state of the art, modern makeup classroom,” Ms Dal Santo said.
“Careful maximisation of every space in the room has delivered a beautiful and comfortable learning space, which features professional lighting around modern makeup mirrors and the latest SMART board technology to facilitate delivery both face to face and remotely.”
Students recently used the classroom to complete a full witch special effects makeup and costuming as an assessment for the Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services. Graduates from Live Production courses at TAFE NSW can go on to have a wide range of careers as stage technicians, special effects makeup artists and lighting designers.
“Live Production graduates can also score great roles in film and television, with a number of TAFE NSW graduates currently working on the latest Mad Max feature film in costume design, set dressing, scenic art, props, design and set building.
“These top-of-the-range facilities will help students gain the skills needed to boost the entertainment and performance industry in Sydney and revive the post-COVID theatre economy," said Ms Dal Santo.
