TAFE NSW Macksville has introduced two new entry-level courses to ensure that locals are equipped with the skills that they need to navigate digital technology with confidence.

For those looking for work, these skills are vital. A report from The New Work Order forecasted 90 per cent of the workforce would require at least basic computer literacy within the next two years. Keeping up with family and friends and connecting with the rest of society during COVID-19 is also essential for wellbeing.

The Certificate I Access to Work & Training (Intro to Digital Communication) will equip students with the skills to master a smart phone and tablet, connect with people using apps and online tools and how to utilise the cloud.

The Certificate II Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (Intro to Online Study Skills) will develop student’s digital literacy skills to gain the confidence and self-motivation to undertake a pathway to further study or work.

Nambucca Heads local Keir Jamieson has discovered becoming computer literate is wonderfully liberating having completed a computer introductory course with TAFE NSW. Having been out of the workforce and busy as a mother and an artist for the past 40 years, Ms Jamieson is ready to further her career as an artist.

“To be able to work with mixed media and sell my work I knew needed to gain a lot more knowledge about computers,” Ms Jamieson said.

“Before studying at TAFE NSW, I didn’t even know how an EFTPOS machine worked. Now, I’m so much more confident with technology in many ways; I can use Skype, send emails, use Powerpoint and Word and print documents that I need without asking anyone for help.

“I am 58 years old and I’m proof that you’re never too old to go to TAFE NSW and learn. There were retirees in the class too who want to do photos and send emails to family and organize things for enjoying their retirement.

“It’s also nice to show friends and family the work I’ve done and be able to keep I contact during the COVID-19 lockdown measures.

“The teacher was fantastic and very patient in explaining and demonstrating tasks. I’ve learned so much and am definitely pleased to have contacted TAFE NSW to discuss my options.”
