Student turns her life around with TAFE NSW

Blacktown local Angela Ramsay looked to TAFE NSW to get her career back on track after she found herself homeless and unemployed.

She worked as a nurse for more than 20 years when she discovered an inoperable hole in her kidney that meant she could no longer keep her job.

Knowing she had to turn her life around, Angela is now studying a Certificate IV in New Small Business at TAFE NSW and is using the skills she has already learnt to relaunch her career and start her own printing business.

“Studying at TAFE NSW means that I can be in control of my business and study in a way that works for me and my situation,” Angela said.

“I decided to change my career and broaden my skill-set to keep up with the expanding business industry.”

She chose to study business at the right time as Western Sydney is now home to more than 150,000 businesses, of which the majority are small business enterprises employing fewer than 20 people.[1]

Angela is now halfway through her course and is able to access the relevant knowledge she needs through TAFE NSW to help kick-start her new career.

TAFE NSW Granville Head Teacher in Business and Finance, Susan Huntington, said Angela was just one example of the types of students that enroll in TAFE NSW business courses.

“Whether people want to apply for that promotion, change careers, or own a successful business like Angela, TAFE NSW courses equip them with practical skills and work experience,” she said.

“TAFE NSW teachers have a breadth of industry experience and employer connections to help progress the careers of students,” Angela said.

Angela’s business, Printique Promos, works with local businesses and customers to make magnets, business cards, banners, posters, invitations.

TAFE NSW offers more than 1,200 courses, diplomas and degrees to choose from. To find out more visit www.tafensw.edu.au or call 131 601.
