Supporting regional students offering in-demand scholarships

TAFE NSW has welcomed the Destination Australia Scholarships program and is encouraging those who have recently made a tree change or are looking to relocate, to consider a career as an early childcare worker or massage therapist.

The $15,000 Commonwealth Government scholarships provide support to students to help with the costs associated with living and studying in regional areas.

TAFE NSW Program Coordinator Sheree Richards said TAFE NSW is supporting the Commonwealth Government’s initiative because it is a fantastic way to showcase regional NSW and equips students with the job-ready skills they need to succeed in high-growth industries.

“TAFE NSW is offering scholarships in early childhood education and care and remedial massage for 2021, both of which are rewarding and interesting industries,” Ms Richards said.

“The scholarships provide an opportunity for students to live and study in regional areas, so they can pursue a career in an industry they are passionate about and set themselves up for success.”

Lismore local and TAFE NSW Wollongbar student Nickolas Sayers received a Destination Australia Scholarship for commercial cookery, which he said has enabled him to pursue a new career.

“I enrolled in the Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery as I was looking to change my career to something that I am truly passionate about. I was previously working as a painter/decorator, but work died down during COVID-19,” Mr Sayers said.

“The scholarship has provided me with the opportunity to jump back into training and I’ve really enjoyed gaining practical skills in the kitchen. My wife is also studying the Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery and our goal is to open a Pakistani food van.

“I encourage others to apply for the scholarship as it provides a great opportunity to learn hands-on skills and helps open doors to new careers.”

Applications for the Semester 1 2021 Destination Australia Scholarships are now open for domestic students, closing on 22 November 2020. Courses include the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE NSW Wollongbar and the Diploma of Remedial Massage at TAFE NSW Port Macquarie.
