TAFE NSW has collaborated with Transport for NSW in their Towards Zero initiative to help reduce the number of serious injuries and lives lost on regional NSW roads.

A road safety rules quiz based on the 10 most misunderstood road rules is being piloted across four regional TAFE NSW campuses in an effort to help students test their knowledge and increase their understanding of NSW road rules.

There have already been 274 lives lost on NSW roads in 2020 to midnight 17 November, including 170 people who have died on country roads, with speeding the single biggest contributor to death and injury, according to the Centre for Road Safety.

TAFE NSW Head of Skills Team for Supply Chain and eCommerce, Peter Denison, said these statistics highlight the need for road safety intervention. 

“Too often we see young people die on our roads from preventable causes like speeding and fatigue, so the collaboration between TAFE NSW and Transport for NSW is an important step in reducing fatalities on roads,” Mr Denison said.

“The quiz is a great learning exercise for students and particularly with National Road Safety Week amongst us, it’s a crucial reminder of the responsibility that comes with getting your license and obligations for driving.”

The pilot quiz is targeted to students from regional areas and specifically students who work in trades that include shift work or long hours, like hospitality and construction trades.

NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the initiative developed by TAFE NSW with Transport for NSW aims to help young drivers be safe and responsible on the roads. 

“More than two-thirds of the lives lost on NSW roads occur in the country, with speeding, drink and drug driving and fatigue the main causes of crashes,” Mr Toole said

“The NSW Government is doing all we can to improve the safety of our roads, but it’s up to all of us to remember that every decision we make when we get behind the wheel can have fatal consequences. 

“As we work to reduce the road toll in NSW Towards Zero and for National Road Safety Week, we are calling on everyone to take the pledge and ‘Lead the way: drive so others survive’.”

TAFE NSW currently delivers a Statement of Attainment in Road Safety Fundamentals to Transport for NSW employees and offers customised training in the areas of traffic control, truck operations and towing skills using a state-of-the-art truck simulator.
