TAFE NSW graduate takes his career from the skies to the seas

TAFE NSW Newcastle graduate Jamie Colley is using his engineering skills to help ensure Australia’s maritime safety, after securing the role of Marine Deputy Engineer in the Australian Border Force.

Jamie Colley grew up around boats so after working as an engineer in aviation and mining, it made sense to try his hand in maritime and pursue an Advanced Diploma in Maritime Operations so he could take the next step in his career.

The Advanced Diploma in Maritime Operations is the latest in many qualifications Mr Colley has gained throughout his career and with this under his belt as of 2020, Jamie is now qualified to work towards his next role as a Chief Engineer with the Australian Border Force.

Previously a TAFE NSW Excellence Award winner, Mr Colley considers himself a lifelong learner because of his various qualifications and work experience. places a TAFE NSW qualification can take you.

“I began my career in aircraft maintenance after getting my trade qualification with TAFE NSW and since then I’ve also completed a Certificate IV in Business Management to assist me in a role at Qantas as a Workshop Planner.”

TAFE NSW Newcastle Head Maritime Studies teacher Aziz Adebayo, who has spent 30 years at sea and ashore in the Australian Maritime Industry, said career seafarers travel from across the globe to our doorstep to earn specialised maritime certifications such as Second Engineer, Chief Engineer and Engineer Watchkeeper. 

“The training students receive locally is recognised internationally as best-in-class. TAFE NSW is well known globally for our high-quality teachers, facilities and technology,” said Mr Adebayo.

“Australian Border Force is well aware of the quality of education. Many of its marine unit officers have studied at TAFE NSW, across Marine Engineering and Maritime Studies to improve their practical skills.

“This enables law enforcement agency officers like Jamie and other seafarers from the Australian Border Force – who are tasked with protecting Australia’s maritime domain – to continually improve on the protection they provide to our country.”
