Jarrod Toole from EarlyRise Baking Co.

Dubbo’s EarlyRise Baking Co. is defying a national trend by choosing to invest in their employees to meet their needs, rather than recruiting new ones.

Talented bakers and pastry chefs, Nathan and Jarrod Toole, and Retail Operations Manager, Taylor Stevenson are the proof in the pudding after their employer invested in their personal and professional development by encouraging them to complete a Diploma of Leadership and Management at TAFE NSW Dubbo.

Nathan Stevenson said “I’ve been working with the family business for ten years and have recently moved from being a baking supervisor to the role of being second-in-charge of production.

“I needed to broaden my skillset and acquire the knowledge to be able to manage staff and have the confidence to run business meetings.

“TAFE NSW did just that; I’ve learnt how to manage people, develop skills in time management and I’m now aware of how to manage issues and conflicts amongst staff.”

Mr Toole added, “I really enjoyed the positive learning environment at TAFE NSW. Not only did I learn from the industry qualified and experienced teachers, I learnt from other like-minded students who were looking to advance their careers and businesses.

“I had just been promoted to the role of cake department supervisor and EarlyRise Baking Co. was not only looking to grow the retail business in Dubbo and Village Bakehouse in Orange, but add new opportunities into the mix by servicing Qantas, Bernardi’s and Harris Farm. Investing in my skills has led to me being able to successfully lead and manage these commercial opportunities for the business.”

TAFE NSW Leadership and Management Teacher, Elizabeth O’Donnell, said all three students worked hard to achieve their study goals and are a great asset to EarlyRise Baking Co.

“TAFE NSW helped Nathan, Taylor and Jarrod advance their careers by equipping them with practical skills and experience. They are to be commended for their outstanding work and will have a bright future as managers, improving and growing the business.”

Courses in leadership and management are now available for semester one enrolment. Visit www.tafensw.com.au or call 131 601 for more information.
