TAFE NSW graduates gain jobs in the booming 3D art and animation industry

The NSW visual effects, animation and post-production industry is booming, sending demand for skilled 3D Art and Animation workers skyrocketing.

Graduates from the Bachelor of 3D Art and Animation at TAFE NSW are well placed to fill in-demand roles in the sector, with over 90% of graduates securing jobs in the industry. Sylvia Gluchowska recently graduated and is now working full-time as a Modelling and Texturing Artist at Fin Design and Effects Surry Hills.

“I was always interested in computer graphics and I wanted to work on games, so I enrolled in the Bachelor of 3D Art and Animation at TAFE NSW to gain the skills to achieve my dream,” Sylvia said.

Animation and production companies are reporting a growing need for artists, having been buoyed by plans from local and overseas film studios and streamers, and newly announced NSW government support[1].

“Studying at TAFE NSW was a great experience, although graduating during the first year of COVID was tough. The course helped me to learn many skills across the 3D industry, from concept to compositing. I got a whole picture on how the whole process looks which helped me decide what field I want to specialize in.

“Learning all the parts of the pipeline helped me understand how I can improve my workflow to help others within the studio. TAFE NSW was also a great place to meet lots of interesting people from all parts of the world. The teachers are legends, passionate about 3D art, willing to help each student and tailor the class to individual needs.”

Head Teacher of 3D Art and Animation at TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore, Vincent Rossini, said interest in 3D Art and Animation courses had skyrocketed in Sydney in the past few years, brought on in part by the swathe of film and television productions which have recently hit our shores.

“There is an unprecedented demand for skilled visual effects worker in Sydney right now,” said Mr Rossini.

“We’ve been teaching 3D Art and Animation for 25 years, so it’s no surprise that over 90% of our recent graduates have secured work in the industry. We have graduates in almost all of the heavyweight production houses both in Australia and worldwide.”

The Bachelor of 3D Art and Animation prepares students for roles in 3D and visual effects, concept or pre-visualisation, 3D modelling for interactive games or creating visual effects for feature films.

60% of all Australians employed in the screen production industry are based in NSW and more than half of all Australian production and postproduction businesses are located in NSW[2]. Recent films to bring their post budgets to Sydney include: The LEGO ® Batman Movie, Ghostbusters, Mad Max: Fury Road, Aquaman, The Avengers, Thor and many more.

“TAFE NSW helped me with developing my portfolio and building my skills, but it takes self-discipline and motivation to make it in the industry. Without my perseverance and help from people close to me, I wouldn't be where I am right now.”
