TAFE NSW helping local students gallop into an equine career

For the first time a group of local high school students have been given an insight into the career opportunities in the equine industry with TAFE NSW Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) Equine Program.

For the past 11 weeks, 16 students from Camden High School attended Camden Bicentennial Equestrian Park and TAFE NSW one day a week to learn about the career pathways available within the horse industry, and with there set to be 12,000 job openings for animal attendants and trainers over the next five years, there is no shortage of jobs.[1]

TAFE NSW Head Teacher Horse Industry Studies, Karlene Triffit said, the equine industry has an endless supply of career pathways to suit almost anyone, and this program gave the students a taste of the job opportunities available.

“Throughout the 11 weeks the students learnt a range of hands-on skills in horse handling, health checks, stable duties, massaging techniques, farriery, breeding, show preparation, and even how to look after horses’ pearly whites.”

For Camden High School student, Chloe horses have always played a big role in her life.

“I have grown up surrounded by horses and have been riding them since the age of four. So when I found out about the opportunity to participate in the TAFE NSW equine program, I was very excited.

“Completing the program has helped me further my knowledge of the equine industry, and taught me more of the practical skills I need for my future career.” said Chloe

Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli said Camden Council is so proud to support the TAFE NSW YES Equine Program.

“It’s the first of its kind to be delivered in the Camden area and it’s a terrific opportunity to promote the career pathways available within the equine industry. I know the participants had a great time and, hopefully, they’ll find something they love doing.” said Ms Fedeli.
