TAFE NSW HELPS JENNIFER IN LEAPS AND SOUNDS

Mortdale local Jennifer Parry has smashed the glass ceiling by gaining three TAFE NSW qualifications and securing employment as a Program Officer at Blind Citizens Australia.

Access to meaningful employment for people with disability, including people who are blind or vision impaired, is a significant boost for Australia’s economy. It is estimated that if an additional 100,000 people with disability were employed by 2050, it would add one per cent to Australia’s gross domestic product[1].

After completing a Certificate III in Business, Jennifer followed her passion for music and completed a Certificate III and Diploma of Music Industry (Performance). Jennifer said studying at TAFE NSW was empowering and encouraged others who are blind, or vision impaired to do the same.

“I have always been a determined person but studying the Certificate III in Business was a real enabler for me to go on and achieve things I’ve always wanted to do,” Jennifer said.

“The support from my TAFE NSW teachers and disability consultant Jodie was terrific. Not only do I use the practical skills I gained in business at my current job, but also my music qualifications gave me confidence to pursue it professionally in the future.

“We live in a time where access and diversity is so important, so I encourage other people who are blind or vision impaired people out there to not be afraid and have a go, reach out to TAFE NSW early, you will not be alone and there is help available.”

TAFE NSW Disability Teacher Consultant Jodie Pringle has supported many blind and vision impaired students as they study a wide range of courses from administration to trades and health services.

TAFE NSW disability teacher consultants provide a wide range of services to students including campus tour inductions, accessible technology, providing information and advice to teachers and students, and offering reasonable adjustments, and accommodation to ensure education is accessible.

Jodie said it had been an honour to play a part in supporting Jennifer’s journey from TAFE NSW to the workplace.

“Jennifer is a reflection of the life changing opportunity TAFE NSW gives students to get ahead or get started in their career,” Ms Pringle said.

“TAFE NSW disability services support all students to succeed in their careers and creative passions, from those living with a hearing impairment, physical and intellectual disability, neurological disorders, chronic illness and mental health conditions.”
