TAFE NSW Horticulture students celery-brate with plant sale

TAFE NSW Padstow’s Nursery, Parks and Gardens, and Horticulture students will open the on-site nursery to the public from April 10-12 for their biannual plant sale.

The three-day sale features a range of plants including Grevillea, Kangaroo Paws, Bottle Brush and Australian Mint Bush at cost-effective prices, that the students have propagated and grown themselves as part of their studies with all proceeds raised will go towards purchasing more resources for the students.

TAFE NSW Padstow, Head Teacher Horticulture, Tony Momi said, “The plant sale is one of the events the students really look forward as it meets some of the learning outcomes they are studying at TAFE NSW. There is a lot of hard work that goes into propagating plants and the students are proud to see their plants go home with happy customers.

“With the cooler weather, it’s an ideal time to put plants in your garden so that they have time to adapt to their new environments. When spring comes along, the plant would have had time to send out some of its roots and adapt into their new home and providing they are happy, they will grow.”

According to the Australian Government Job Outlook, the number of Garden and Nursery Labourers grew moderately the past five years and is expected to stay about the same over the next five years from 32,200 in 2018 to 32,200 by 2023[i].
