TAFE NSW HUNTER STREET LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE ARTS DEGREE

TAFE NSW Hunter Street is helping to meet local demand for jobs in the thriving arts sector by offering a Bachelor of Creative Practice for the first time.

Commencing in Semester 1 2021, the hands-on degree will provide budding artists with the practical and theoretical skills needed to forge a career in the creative arts industry.

TAFE NSW Regional General Manager Jason Darney said the three-year degree has been developed with industry to provide students with a solid foundation for a career in the arts industry.

“The Bachelor of Creative Practice will provide students with the knowledge and experience they need to land a job and successfully navigate their career – whether that’s in-house, as a freelancer or applying for commissions and grants,” Mr Darney said.

“Students will be able to hone their creative skills across a range of disciplines including drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media, while also developing their entrepreneurship and business skills so they can set themselves up for success.

“The degree combines online learning with practical training at TAFE NSW Hunter Street’s state-of-the-art creative studio – so students can study when it suits them.”

Business Manager at Newcastle Arts Space Leah Fawthrop said there is a huge demand for the course in the region.

“Having access to courses, teachers and arts facilities of such a high standard is vitally important for the creative community. Importantly, it means students do not have to travel to Sydney to get a fine arts degree,” Ms Fawthrop said.

“The Newcastle arts sector is incredibly resilient and continuing to thrive and grow, and this new course is an incredible asset for Newcastle itself and the wider community.”

Applications are now open for the Bachelor of Creative Practice (Advanced Entry) at TAFE NSW Hunter Street.
