TAFE NSW Mudgee students lend a hand and gain new skills

TAFE NSW Mudgee Certificate II in Construction students have hit the nail on the head with the design and construction of a new outdoor animal kennel that will benefit a number of TAFE NSW animal studies students.

TAFE NSW Animal Studies Teacher, Lisa Tubnor, said the project was initiated after TAFE NSW Mudgee received new animal cages to assist with the development of animal handling and hygiene skills for students.

“The idea of an outdoor kennel run constructed by TAFE NSW students made sense as the project would be mutually beneficial for both groups of students.

“The outdoor enclosure will help increase the students knowledge in different environments for animals along with learning the required skills to maintain an outdoor animal area correctly.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to diversify the hands-on learning environment students study in at TAFE NSW,” Ms Tubnor said.

TAFE NSW Certificate II in Construction student, Brydie Knihinicki, said she really enjoyed working on a real project during her construction course.

“By working on the project, I have developed hands-on skills in construction, bricklaying and concreting. It has also been rewarding to see our design brought to life.

“It’s great that we have been able to put our new skills to use and other TAFE NSW students are able to benefit from our efforts,” Ms Knihinicki said.

TAFE NSW research and the Department of Jobs and Small Business reports suggest that now is the perfect time to be considering a career in either construction or animal care industries with 38% of job vacancies unable to be filled in 2018 in the construction industry and 12,000 new job openings for animal attendants expected in Australia over the next five years.
