TAFE NSW OFFERS OPPORTUNITY TO BE SKILLED FASTER

A suite of short courses offered at TAFE NSW is equipping locals with specialised skills in Early Childhood Education and Care, allowing them to be skilled in just 12 weeks.

Mircocredentials in managing a childcare centre; working with children with disabilities; teaching in Aboriginal communities; and leading a team in the childcare industry are now open for enrolments at TAFE NSW Nirimba for those looking to upskill or specialise in the industry.

Microcredentials have soared in popularity over the past two years, with students preferring flexible training and the opportunity to receive practical skills faster.1

TAFE NSW Early Childhood Education course coordinator, Melinda Barsoum, said there are four short courses that each run for 12 weeks which are subjects from the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care degree.

“We’ve had great interest in the course from people who are already working in the industry and want to equip themselves with specialist skills,” Mrs Barsoum said.

“As well as this, there are no current regulations around earning a qualification in order to open a childcare centre so the course provides great foundational knowledge to begin in the industry.”

Teacher’s aid, Marie Mulder was looking to expand her role and work in aboriginal communities. Marie, 60, just completed the skillset in Aboriginal Studies. The course allowed her to get the hands-on skills she needed to work with Aboriginal children, elders and their wider community.

“I really wanted to gain a well-rounded understanding of the Aboriginal culture before I worked with children in the community and the course equipped me with the key skills and a cultural sensitiveness to be able to do this confidently,” Marie said.
