TAFE NSW Katoomba alumnus Bianca Jones is about to open her first beauty shopfront called Beauty Lane by B in Emu Plains after starting her career by working out of a room in a hair salon.
After completing her studies, Bianca spent time renting space in a hair salon so she could gain experience and also grow her client base.
Bianca said “Since I was 15 years old I knew that I wanted a career in the beauty industry, so at the time I saved up my money so I could do a course with Napeleon Perdis. I loved it so I wanted to do further study so I completed my beauty apprenticeship with the Certificate III and Certificate IV in Beauty at TAFE NSW Katoomba.”
Studying at TAFE NSW has been extremely rewarding both personally and professionally for Bianca.
“The teachers are very personable and are great role models. They had their own salons so learning from TAFE NSW teachers who owned their own businesses is not only very beneficial but as a student you really respect teachers who have the industry experience that they can teach us.
“People don’t understand the time that it takes to learn the trade to be a fully qualified beautician, you have to start with the very basics. The first day at TAFE NSW Katoomba we were thrown right in with practical work and doing leg waxes, but that’s the nature of the industry and the training, you just have to get in there and do it so you learn.”
Beauty Lane by B will specialise in eyebrow and eyelash extenions, it will also have a facial room offering clients facials using only organic and toxin free products.
Bianca’s advice for anyone considering a career in the beauty indstury is “It takes a lot of practice and a lot of time. Be aware of the trends and study. Education and time is what you need to become a fully qualified beautician.”
According to the Australian Government Job Outlook, the number of Beauty Therapists grew very strongly over the past five years and is expected to grow very strongly over the next five years from 36,100 in 2018 to 42,800 by 2023.
