Griffith local Lachlan O'Grady encourages young people to get a head start in the automotive industry at TAFE NSW after finishing first in the state in the HSC Automotive Examination.

The 18-year-old studied a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology at TAFE NSW Griffith while completing his HSC at Murrumbidgee High School.

Mr O'Grady said he had a long history of mechanics in his family and decided to enrol in the course to learn some practical life skills and gain real-world experience while still at school.  

"Going to my TAFE class was my favourite day of the week. Our teachers knew their stuff, and we got to build on our skills in the workshop, using the latest technology and a range of current model cars to further our learning," Mr O'Grady said.

"The  course was incredibly valuable for my job at Repco, it helped me build my understanding of the products and enabled me to offer informed advice to customers and knowledgeably recommend different products.

"I feel really confident that the skills I've learned at TAFE NSW and my exam results will be a major selling point with employers as I work out my next steps."  

TAFE NSW Griffith Head Teacher of Automotive Frank Nardi said Lachlan's result in the HSC was a testament to his commitment to excellence in the automotive industry.

"Lachlan's exceptional result in the HSC reflects on his hard work and dedication, but also the quality, hands-on training TAFE NSW provides students to help them reach their career ambitions and ensure we’re developing the  skilled and capable workforce of the future," Mr Nardi said. 

"We're excited to be offering school leavers the chance to explore a career in the automotive industry as part of the Summer Skills program. Students can enrol in a Statement of Attainment in Automotive for free at TAFE NSW Griffith.

"The five-day program starts on 14 February, and we'll be getting hands-on in the workshop. It's a great opportunity to get a taste and gain industry-relevant skills to get a head start." 

Mr O'Grady said if you want to learn more about the trade, studying at TAFE NSW is the best place to start. 

"The Summer Skills program is a great opportunity to take home some skills for free and learn valuable life skills while you're figuring out the next step in your career," said Mr O'Grady.
