TAFE NSW STUDENT TURNS UP THE VOLTAGE ON HIS CAREER

A Prairewood local has become a qualified electrician just six years after arriving in Australia and learning the English language thanks to TAFE NSW.

Gabriel Jabbo arrived in Australia in 2015 and studied a Certificate III in English for Further Study at TAFE NSW Wetherill Park. The course equipped him with key communication skills as well as general knowledge of Australia’s history and culture.

“The Certificate III in English for Further Study opened doors for me to be able to get an apprenticeship and effectively launch my career as an electrician,” Gabriel said.

He was then able to pathway into the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician at TAFE NSW Miller.

“I would have never thought that within six years of arriving in Australia, I’d be working as a fully qualified electrician. The course has given me the confidence and knowledge to eventually open my own business.”

“I’m so grateful for the support my TAFE NSW teachers gave to me, they were always there to answer any of the questions that I had,” Gabriel said.

According to a report from the Australia Department of Jobs and Small Business, NSW is currently experiencing a shortage of electricians, with the report highlighting that employers were generally not able to fill vacancies in metropolitan and regional NSW.

TAFE NSW Electrical Team Leader, Lee Wilton, said the nationally recognised Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician not only allows students to work on homes but also offers the opportunity to upskill and work on major infrastructure projects.

“The opportunities are endless as the course provides a pathway to further training so students can then work on rail lines and other high voltage projects,” Mr Wilton said.

“Whether you’re a first-year apprentice or looking to change careers, the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician will equip you with in-demand skills that industry is crying out for.”
