North Balgowlah local Olivia Deppeler-Howe has been announced as the winner of the Central and Northern Sydney Training Awards VET in Schools Student of the Year at the prestigious Training Services NSW virtual event last night.

The TAFE NSW student, who is now studying full-time at university was one of three TAFE NSW winners of the awards announced via Facebook live.

TAFE NSW Regional General Manager Vicky Mazzeo said the strong showing by TAFE NSW finalists for the six award categories was testament to their commitment to excellence in their chosen field. 

“Congratulations to Olivia on winning VET in Schools Student of the Year, this is a wonderful result for TAFE NSW and a glowing endorsement of Olivia's natural ability and determination,” said Ms Mazzeo. 
 
“Olivia's success is a great reminder of how important the presence of TAFE NSW is in our communities. For over 130 years, dedicated TAFE NSW teachers have helped students to reach their potential and forge successful career paths.”

Olivia Deppeler-Howe said “Winning this award means a lot to me; I juggled my HSC and chronic illness to complete my Certificate III in Events. 

“It wasn’t easy, but the opportunity to complete the course flexibly at TAFE NSW was one of the most rewarding experiences of my entire schooling journey. 

“I hope I inspire others like me who may feel their education or future career paths are restricted by their medical conditions to take advantage of the flexibility that exists while studying at TAFE NSW and working in the events industry, Olivia said.

Minister for Tertiary Education, Geoff Lee, said that he was delighted that so many of the award winners were from TAFE NSW and that the strong results at this year’s awards we are clear demonstration of the high-quality education and training provided by Australia’s largest training provider. 

“TAFE NSW plays a critical role in shaping the careers of people across a range of important industries that are critical to the economy.

“Olivia is testament to the depth of talent and exciting career opportunities on offer through vocational education and training pathways. 

The NSW Training Awards celebrate the excellence of apprentices, trainees and students undertaking vocational education and training.

The winners from the Central and Northern Sydney Training Awards will be interviewed and considered for the NSW Training Awards which will are planned to be held in Sydney later this year.
