TAFE NSW Macksville students studying a Certificate III in Career Advancement which focuses on art and design displayed their wares for the opening of an exhibition on Friday night.

Held at Matilda Street Gallery, the exhibition is open to the public and runs until 16th October. Attendees browsed through student’s creations available for purchase.

The digital disruption in recent years is providing new avenues for craft workers to grow their markets and for hobbyists to pursue professional opportunities in their chosen medium. The handmade craft industry, including pottery, furniture making and jewellery, is experiencing a revival due to the growth of online selling platforms like Etsy and changing consumer preferences with customers willing to pay a premium for unique and localised products.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Career Pathways, Aboriginal Language and Employability Skills, Emily Pellier, said this course equips students with the capabilities to either move on to a higher qualification or be able to open their own business in their chosen field.

“Students who study this course have usually already found their passion, they just need guidance from an experienced professional on how to master their skill set and, in addition, learn the practical side of operating and sustaining a business.

“We have a range of artists in this class ranging from fashion designers to painters. The learning environment at TAFE NSW allows for these students to grow as artists.

"You can see the satisfaction of a student when they sell one of their creations after putting in the hard work and learning all sides of a business. These students are turning what they love into a career and it’s very rewarding to witness," she said.

Julie Keighran is a student who paints on animal skulls and other animal bones. Mrs Keighran studies the Certificate III in Career Advancement in order to assist her in a dream of expanding her business, which currently operates through her Facebook page and via word of mouth sales.

“At the moment, I am selling products to family and friends. This course is helping me to push my boundaries and think outside of the box when it comes to both my art and the business side of things.

“It has been especially helpful being in a class room with an experienced teacher and fellow creative students who are all willing and available to give feedback on details ranging from business logos to aspects of your designs.”
