TAFE NSW will train the next generation of medical administration professionals in Liverpool with a new school-based course for year 10 students.

TAFE NSW Liverpool has responded to the accelerating growth of the Health and Education precinct in the CBD, reinforced by the recent $740 million investment to redevelop Liverpool Hospital and will deliver a Statement of Attainment in Medical Administration to build a pipeline of skilled employees for the industry.

A new simulated medical surgery at TAFE NSW Liverpool will be used as a training base for 21 high school students from John Edmondson High School, Ashcroft and Miller High School, where they will learn hands on skills including how to use a blood pressure machine, labelling specimen samples, ordering medical equipment and assessing patients.

TAFE NSW Regional General Manager, Michael Cullen, said, “TAFE NSW is an integral part of the Liverpool city centre and has been an active participant in plans to harness opportunities that generate jobs in the health sector and related support industries.

“TAFE NSW is providing students with ongoing opportunities to learn hands-on skills relevant to the workforce of the future and we are positioned to capitalise on the momentum generated from the growth of Liverpool, in concert with industry partners.”

As part of the launch of the Medical Administration course, students will tour the UNSW Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre in Liverpool Hospital and Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.

Darryl Harkness, CEO of the Ingham Institute said, “The Ingham Institute and TAFE NSW have a unique opportunity to grow careers in STEM through the upcoming Health, Education and Research Innovation Precinct in Liverpool by 2026.”

“It is a great collaboration between TAFE NSW and the Ingham Institute in that students can gain industry experience and hands on skills and also have the opportunity to experience the latest medical technologies and speak with researchers and health professionals on the many pathways a career in medical administration can lead to.”

Employment in the Health Care and Social Assistance industry is projected to increase by 15 per cent over the next five years, which is supported by large investments in hospitals. [1]
