TAFE NSW upskills Moree council leadership team

A new cohort of leaders are ready to lead their teams to success at Moree Plains Shire Council, after completing hands-on training at TAFE NSW.

With support from the council, employees completed a Certificate IV in Leadership and Management, giving them the knowledge and hands-on experience to be successful leaders. 

The council employees completing the course learnt skills in operational planning, performance management, conflict resolution, communication and how to be solutions focused.

It comes as a report from the Centre for Workplace Leadership reveals that investing in leadership development can significantly improve workplace performance and innovation.

Moree Plains Shire Council’s Integrated Planning and Reporting Coordinator, Victoria Dawson completed the training at TAFE NSW with the goal of enhancing her management skills.

“The course teaches you to learn through critical reflection on your own experiences, and I gained skills that will help me both in the workplace and in my personal life,” Ms Dawson said.

“I’m a better version of myself after completing this course and I have more confidence as a leader.”

Moree Plains Shire Council’s Human Resource Manager, Debby Baxter-Tomkins said TAFE NSW Moree was a critical local training resource, and the council would continue to encourage employees to upskill at TAFE NSW.

“This year we are hoping to partner with TAFE NSW Moree again to provide work experience placements and, importantly, put employees through a Certificate IV in Project Management at the Moree campus.”

TAFE NSW Head Teacher Lynne Sheather said upskilling the local workforce was important for the growth of the Moree region.

“It’s important to continue to develop skills in regional areas for sustainability and growth and the students I have taught have passion for their work and commitment to their community, which is uplifting,” she said.

“I returned to teaching because I wanted to give people the confidence to be leaders and help them realise their capabilities.”

Ms Sheather said having a mixed cohort of TAFE NSW students from different industries was beneficial for all and allowed more perspectives to be discussed in the classroom. 

“The partnership between Moree Council and TAFE NSW is collaborative and is beneficial to all involved,” she said.
