In March, a group of 17 teachers from China’s Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering, visited TAFE NSW Ultimo to get an insight into how TAFE NSW is preparing the workforce of the future.

Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering is the only public full-time vocational college in the Guangdong Province of China that focuses on water conservancy and electricity. To expand on their teaching effectiveness and outcomes,  the teachers completed an intensive, two week hands-on Vocational Education Leadership Training.

Focused on civil engineering and assessment training, the two week program provided the teachers with an overview of the Australian VET system and gave them a chance to observe how civil engineering classes at TAFE NSW operate.

They also completed classroom training which showed them how to plan assessment activities and processes, design and develop assessment tools and how to validate and assess competency.

TAFE NSW Team Leader Building, Tom Hore said, “It is important for the teachers from Guangdong Polytechnic of Water Resources and Electric Engineering to see the ways that vocational education and training differs between countries and gain an understanding of how TAFE NSW delivers qualifications.

Not only did they spend time observing how a civil engineering class at TAFE NSW operates, they were also taught the programs delivered and technology used at TAFE NSW and shown how hands-on experience in the field better prepares students for the workforce.”

As part of the program, the teachers were given the opportunity to experience this construction boom first hand, completing construction site visits. 

TAFE NSW Coordinator International Mobility in Global Engagement, Fumiko Percival said, “We received excellent feedback from the group of teachers who completed the program. They really enjoyed the range of practical and theoretical lessons that TAFE NSW offered and the opportunity to learn from Australia’s largest education and training provider.”
