A tragic car accident in 2017 lead TAFE NSW student and Green Valley local, Mary Jane Pagnin, down a new career path.

Mary Jane was employed as a child care worker before she was tragically hit by a car while crossing the street, which saw her thrown into the path of an oncoming car. She sustained serious injuries to her head, back and neck and had to undergo months of rehabilitation as a result.

It was then that Mary Jane looked to TAFE NSW Liverpool to relaunch her career in Business Administration to align with her physical abilities.

“It was a hard time in my life but the support I received from the disability services team at TAFE NSW gave me the courage to relaunch my career and be successful in my studies.

“I never thought I’d be able to change careers this far into my life but my teachers have been so encouraging and provided a hands on learning environment that has allowed me to broaden my skillset,” Mary Jane said.

Fast forward three years and she has overcome her injuries and has now completed a Certificate IV in Business Administration, a Diploma in Business Administration and a Certificate IV in Accounting through TAFE NSW.

Mary Jane gained employment the moment she completed her studies, and is now working in the finance department of a Western Sydney logistics company.

The business administration sector is expected to see an 8.4 percent growth in administrative support service careers over the next few years.[1]

“I love my job and the people I work with. I finally feel like I’m in a career that challenges me and helps me use my knowledge and practical skills to help others,” she said.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Business and Finance, Leah Simpson said Mary Jane received a range of disability support while studying her courses.

“TAFE NSW facilitated access to a range of disability support services to assist Mary Jane to complete her courses including a disability assistant, mentoring and counselling services,” Ms Simpson said.

“Mary Jane is a great example that it’s never too late to switch careers and pursue further study in a course that is suited to their dream career,
