Wiradjuri language learning proves popular at TAFE NSW Grenfell Connected Learning Centre

The introduction of a Certificate I in Fundamental Aboriginal Languages for Personal Use course in August has been one of many highlights at the TAFE NSW Grenfell Connected Learning Centre (CLC) this year.

By studying the course for 30 weeks, students develop the knowledge and practical skills to participate in fundamental spoken exchanges and written text in targeted Aboriginal Languages. In Grenfell, Aunty Iris Reid is teaching students the Wiradjuri language.

Course participants Julie Ferguson, Tammy Archer, and Terry and Deidre Carroll, are not only enjoying learning the Wiradjuri language, but ensuring the language is not lost on future generations.

Julie said, “I decided to learn the Wiradjuri language to teach my grandchildren and family, and to help educate the local community.”

Terry said, “I’m Aboriginal but Aniwan people from the Kamilaroi tribe. I live in Grenfell which is Wiradjuri language, so I thought it would be appropriate to try and learn the local language.”

Deidre added, “I decided to learn the Wiradjuri language to support my husband (Terry). All our children and grandchildren identify as Aboriginal and they are so happy that we are doing it.

“Often our grandchildren do Acknowledgement to Country in their respective schools and we just thought it would be a great opportunity to learn the language to be role models for them.

“I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge of learning a new language - Aunty Iris is absolutely wonderful and helps and supports us all the way.”

There are a range of Semester 1 2020 courses available for enrolment now. In the meantime, the next course at TAFE NSW Grenfell will be a Statement of Attainment in First Aid on November 29.

“The new Connected Learning Centre is just out of this world! It’s a magnificent facility and I encourage the community to explore the courses and study options that are available right here in Grenfell,” Deidre said.

For anyone who has ever considered studying at TAFE NSW Grenfell, now is the ideal time. For information or to enrol, visit www.tafensw.edu.au or phone 131 601.
