Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Pathways to Further Study is a Year 11 equivalent course, designed to give you the academic know-how and practice for higher level study. You will learn the essential skills employers are looking for and be able to take the next step toward your study goals.


Through theoretical and practical course work, you will learn to:

  • Write in an academic manner
  • Set goals and manage your time
  • Research efficiently
  • Undertake scientific experiments
  • A variety of technology
  • Complete general and/or advanced mathematics


Develop the attributes needed to get ahead:

  • Good problem solving skills
  • The ability to work alone and in groups

Completing this course will provide you with:

  • A nationally recognised qualification at Certificate III level (Year 11 Equivalent)
  • Strong pathways to continued study

  • Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation
  • Further vocational study at Certificate IV and above

To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Complete a literacy/numeracy assessment, and achieve ACSF level 3 or above
  • Attend an interview

You will be informed on how to complete these requirements upon application.


No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification.


There is no work placement requirement for this qualification.


To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to attend class on a weekly basis

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.


This is a full time, face to face course. You will need to attend approximately 16.5 hours of class, over 3-4 days a week, for 18 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 3 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 20 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including revison, assessment preparation, independent research and private study.


This course delivery is designed for people who would like a pathway to the following educational and vocational outcomes:

  • A year 12 equivalent qualification
  • A Tertiary Entrance Score (TES) for those wishing/seeking entry into university
  • Articulation into higher level VET qualifications
  • Entry to careers in the Australian Defence Forces with a year 12 qualification
  • Entry to careers requiring a year 12 equivalent qualification.

To keep you safe while studying, some of our face to face classes may be replaced with online or connected learning. We have also modified our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. As restrictions ease, the way you attend your class may change again. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, due to the impacts of COVID 19 there may be a delay or modification in being able to undertake these aspects of your course in the planned timeframe. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Attendance pattern will vary depending on subject selection and some days/sessions will not need to be attended as they are for electives.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
