It applies to workers involved in middle to senior level management of disaster recovery, and/or individuals who might be members of a recovery committee or directly support such members.
Communities are diverse and dynamic, and thanks to technology they are no longer uninformed. In today's world it is not uncommon for communities to know before emergency agencies what has happened and to what extent. Community capital is often overlooked in emergency management, many community members have valuable skills or resources that may assist response to or recovery from emergencies or disasters. The most effective way of dealing with emergencies and disasters is to recognise the importance of including communities in all aspects of emergency management. This requires trust from both the communities and agencies with a role in emergency management. This unit will enhance your skills in engaging communities to increase disaster resilience. Working with communities before, during and after a disaster is an essential part of emergency management and the best results encourage shared responsibility through community participation. This Unit is designed for people who work with the community in emergency management, including; emergency planners; local government representatives; first responders; recovery managers; state and Australian government engagement workers; those who have a role with NGOs and other community organisations. It covers building, rebuilding and maintaining trusting relationships with individuals and communities and the development of community problem-solving capacity.
