Course Details

The importance of disaster-impacted communities being able to lead and drive their own social, economic, and natural and built environment recovery is reflected in contemporary research and disaster management policy. This unit will help to develop the skills needed to design and implement a recovery model that connects with and fosters community resilience. It will also examine the different approaches required for ‘bottom-up’ community-led recovery, compared to the more traditional ‘top-down’ model of recovery services being determined by and delivered to the community by external agencies.
It applies to workers involved in middle to senior level management of disaster recovery, and/or individuals who might be members of a recovery committee or directly support such members.
This skill set is based on the competencies PUAEMR017A Manage recovery functions and services and PUAEMR016A Facilitate community involvement in recovery.

This Statement of Attainment supports the management of a range of recovery functions and services within the context of working with an affected community to develop a strategic approach to its own recovery. Provision of financial assistance, personal support programs, health services, rebuilding programs and business continuity are covered in parallel to strategies for strengthening ongoing community capacity, enhancing social, economic, environmental and physical infrastructure of affected communities. It necessarily involves recovery planning and coordinating service delivery together with the process that facilitate community leading their recovery. It also includes the monitoring and review of the effectiveness of the recovery process.
The course is delivered online over ten weeks via the RI Learning Hub Moodle.Students will be provided with a course schedule when course details are confirmed.
