Course Details

This course is for trade qualified and licensed heavy vehicle mechanics who wish to become an Authorised Examiner under the Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme (HVAIS) administered by Roads and Maritime Services ( RMS ) of NSW. The course is open to heavy vehicle mechanics who are qualified and licensed and have a current APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter issued by Roads and Maritime.

The HVAIS Examiner is authorised to conduct inspections and issue inspection reports on motor vehicles with a GVM exceeding 4.5 tonne, trailers with an Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) exceeding 4.5 tonne and with power-operated brakes, light trailers and caravans that have an ATM exceeding 2 tonne and buses. They issue inspection reports that are used for Heavy Vehicle Safety Checks, Identity Checks, Design Checks, Adjustment Of Records and Clearance of Defect Notices.

Successful completion of the course enables your authority as an Authorised Examiner under the Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme. The course is delivered in a classroom and workshop environment at a TAFE college near you and includes 24 hours of face to face instruction (3 x 8 hour days) addressing the requirements of the Authorised Examiner role. The course covers your legal and compliance requirements and your role as a public official; the tools, methods and test equipment required to thoroughly inspect heavy vehicles; inspection processes and workflows; Safety, Identity and Design Check Standards and application of the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual (NHVIM); accessing and completing forms and using online reporting system.

Class attendance is required to complete this course. The course is delivered face to face at multiple locations across NSW and is managed from TAFE NSW Wollongong.
1 - You must have a current APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter with EXAMINER listed in the Eligibility section BEFORE enrolling in this course.

This course is designed for qualified heavy vehicle mechanics who wish to become Heavy Vehicle Authorised Inspection Scheme Examiners and is delivered at a TAFE NSW automotive training facility. The 24 hour course (3 x 8 hour days) will guide you through the legal and regulatory requirements, inspection standards, form work and online reporting requirements Authorised Examiners are required to comply with.

Course assessment include; knowledge quizzes, inspection of motor vehicles, completion of forms and use of online reporting systems. Your enrolment includes two attempts to pass the assessments.
