Course Details

The Australian fire and land management agencies recognise the Course in Basic Wildfire Awareness as the minimum requirement for non-firefighting personnel who provide support services at wildfires or at planned burns.

This course provides the outcomes required to recognise the key risks of a wildfire or planned burn environment and the related precautions that need to be taken to avoid these risks for:

non-firefighting personnel, working under supervision in support roles at wildfires or at planned burns
people who may encounter wildfires or planned burns in the course of their activities.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Entry to the course is not restricted based on age, gender, social or educational background.

However, participants should have the language and literacy skills that facilitate successful completion of the course, such as being able to:

read and interpret short simple texts on a personally relevant topic
locate specific information relating to familiar contexts in a text which may contain data in simple graphic, diagrammatic, formatted or visual form
complete forms or write notes using factual or personal information relating to familiar contexts
take part in short interpersonal exchanges, clarifying meaning and maintaining interaction, for the purpose of establishing, maintaining and developing communication, exploring issues or problem solving.

This is a connected learning via virtual classroom course. You will need to complete approximately 6 hours of study via the online learning management system (Moodle) over 1 week.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom. This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies.

Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

  • provide support services at wildfires or at planned burns, such as media liaison personnel, wildlife carers, police, ambulance officers, State Emergency Service personnel, first aid officers, utility company employees, camp ground hosts, contractors.
