Course Details

This unit of competency provides the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults. Aimed at educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies, this unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

Specific licensing requirements, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the Australian Childrens Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and/or relevant state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authority.

To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • access to a computer and Internet for some research activities and completion of quiz assessments. You will require a reliable Internet connection.
  • to be reasonably, physically fit to undertake the First Aid practical assessment which requires students to be physically able to perform CPR on the floor for a period of six (6) minutes, in multiple scenarios
  • to be capable of moving around on the floor to perform scenario assessments in small teams, including bandaging and operating an AED (Automatic Emergency Defibrillator)

This course is the First Aid unit (HLTAID004), which is a work requirement for those in Early Childhood Services.

This is an online course. You will need to complete approximately 6 hours of online study, each week, for the recommended study period.
You can increase the hours of online study per week to complete the course sooner.

As well as the online component, there is a requirement to do 8 hours of face to face or other study.

The 1 day practical assessment session for HLTAID004 will be completed onsite at TAFE Digital, Strathfield. There are a variety of days available including Saturday sessions.

The session will involve:

  • theory revision
  • demonstration and assessment of practical skills:
    • CPR
    • operation of a defibrillator
    • asthma puffers
    • response to emergency scenarios including bandaging
  • written test


This course is the First Aid unit (HLTAID004), which is a work requirement for those in Early Childhood Services.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • want to gain a First Aid certificate that is focused on young children
  • are working in the Early Childhood field, as it is the First Aid qualification required by all Children's Services.

This First Aid certificate also covers the general first aid certificate, HLTAID003, including CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis management.


There are additional learning and study tools available for this course, including:

  • support through an online resource and online quiz assessments
  • a one (1) day face to face practical session, which includes additional assessments
  • access to teacher support through phone and email contact
  • teachers to guide you through the practical session.

Practical assessments are required to assess skills in a variety of First Aid emergencies. All practical assessments need to be completed on the day.

This course is the recognised First Aid Course for those working in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Your enrolment is for 6 months: study in your own time at your own pace. An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. The plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail the units and assessments.

This training is not subsidised by Government funding. There are no fee exemptions, concessions or subsidies available for this course.
