Course Details

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required effectively as a key member of the on board command firefighting team and manage shipboard fire prevention, co-ordinate tactical firefighting and use and maintain firefighting and fire detection equipment carried on board. No fee exemptions are available for this course. Students must have obtained an AMSA approved Basic Fire Fighting before attending the Advanced Fire Course or Certificate of Safety Training Certificate (CoST). The following certificate will be issued to students who successfully complete the course:

  • AMSA Approved Advanced Fire meeting the requirements of STCW Reg VI/3 and Code Section A-VI/3, Table A-VI/3.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, please note the following pre-requisite and evidence that must be provided at enrolment point or on the first day of class:

  • A Basic Fire Fighting Certificate (issued by an AMSA approved training provider); or
  • An overseas STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Certificate); or
  • Certificate of Safety, Proficiency or Competency
  • 16 years of age

To successfully complete this course and to satisfy AMSA requirements attendance and participation in all activities is mandatory.

Fire practicals are conducted at the Mines Rescue at 533 Lakes Road, Argenton. Lunch will be provided on both days of practicals. Students will have to make their own way to the practical sessions. A change of clothes will be required on the second day.

For the practicals, students must bring work overalls, protective eyewear, closed work shoes and sun protection. Travel details and maps will be provided on the first day of class. Masks must be worn if required to do so and check-ins at all venues is mandatory.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full time, on campus course. You must attend approximately 24 hours of class.

The course will run 4 days a week for 1 week.

This qualification is suitable for persons working in the Maritime Industry who wish to obtain certification as per the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments and AMSA requirements. (Deck Watch keeper, Chief Mate, Masters Unlimited, Master less than 500 ton, 1st Class Engineer, 2nd Class Engineer and Engine Room Watch keeper) or those wanting to work on yachts, superyachts and vessels overseas.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with day classes and Thursday with morning classes. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

This training is not subsidised by Government funding. There are no fee exemptions, concessions or subsidies available for this course.
